Detroit - A famous journalist once said: “Buy the ticket, take the ride.”
And while I am no Hunter S. Thompson, and by no means live as extravagant and outgoing as he once did, I can relate to those words.
Pursuing a career in journalism is something I have wanted to do since writing for my high school paper. Yet throughout my first few years of college, I have shunned what my heart has told me to do. I have followed the advice of councilors and relatives, going to school for safer and more bountiful careers.
I have at one point and time sought a career in engineering, computer science, criminal justice and secondary education. The one thing all of these fields have in common is that I despise them. Not to say they are necessarily bad choices, just that I had no heart for them.
That is until this year. I entered my first semester at Eastern Michigan University this fall. I entered it with a fresh start and a fresh perspective. I’m finally following my heart and going after a dream of writing that I have had since high school.
I’m not striving to be Hunter S. Thompson. No one ever could. But I am taking a piece of his advice.
I bought my ticket, time to take the ride.
